Give the gift of a great first impression! This holiday give your friends and family a gift they, and their guests, will see every single day - a custom Walpole doorknocker! Walpole doorknockers are beautifully crafted and one of a kind, taking the shape of classic elements like sailboats, pinecones, and seashells. A doorknocker is the perfect gift - it will add class and style to your friend's or family's home without having to know their size or favorite color! From scallops to sailboats to pine cones to the ubiquitous pineapple, Walpole's doorknockers make a handsome and welcoming adornment. Our doorknockers are sand cast in solid yellow or red brass and lacquered for tarnish resistance. Mounting hardware is supplied for use on wood, metal, or fiberglass composite doors. Here are a few of our classic door knockers.

My mum spends half the year in France and loves nothing more than a trawl of flea markets and brocantes (it must be in the genes). She recently sent me a picture of her latest find. This is a doorknocker, in the shape of a woman’s hand, and it was just one of many she’d seen for sale that day. It got me wondering about this piece of door furniture. So practical and ubiquitous that you barely even notice them, door knockers can also be powerfully symbolic. They are, after all, the very first physical contact you are likely to have with a building, even before you enter it. So what different designs are out there, and where might they have come from?

It is thought that door knockers as designed objects first became popular in the Middle Ages, a time of both burgeoning craftsmanship but also superstition. At this time gargoyles, dogs and lions appeared as door knocker motifs, primarily to prevent evil spirits from entering the home. As the Enlightenment swept aside some of these superstitions, and decoration for the home became more ornate, the lion motif endured in England. By Georgian and Victorian times, when the British Empire was full of confidence, the symbolic lion’s head graced many a fashionable door, and is still present on the iconic black door of Number 10 Downing Street.

Other classic styles of door knocker include the Adam style knocker, typically an urn-shaped knocker influenced by the neo-classical style of 18th century designers Robert and James Adam. The Doctor’s door knocker is another popular style, made up of a single rod curled at each end. Business-like and noisy, this style of knocker was, unsurprisingly, originally found on the doors of doctor’s houses, who could be expected to be disturbed by emergency callers at all times of day or night.

And what about the lady’s hand knocker that mum found in France? Well a little research explains why one town had so many antique versions on sale. Open palms appear on door furniture as early as 3,000 BC in Mesopotamia, and a female hand was used to protect houses from evil in many areas of the Mediterranean and Middle East. It is thought that this design spread from Morocco to France in the late 19th century, at exactly the time when the Art Nouveau movement was also opening up design to more sensual and feminine properties.

When my parents bought the house, my mother immediately took up the decor of the house. And for the door, she decided to order a door knocker on order. For several days, she was choosing the right design for the door knocker. And dad at this time was engaged in equipping the garage. He wanted to install automatic garage doors. It turned out to be not so easy to choose such doors. Dad studied various options to find the most suitable one. He tried to learn more about what types of garage doors are, what are their differences, and where it is better to order. As a result, dad installed excellent doors, which, among other things, perfectly matched the overall style of the house.
